i-shock! iPhone 14 sales dropped despite big discounts in China vs iPhone 13 in 2021

iPhone 14 is struggling in the world’s largest smartphone market, where its most recent weekly sales fell by a third compared to last year’s iPhone 13.

The latest iPhone generation from Apple Inc. is struggling in the world’s largest smartphone market, where, according to Jefferies, the most recent weekly sales fell by a third compared to last year.

Sales in China of the four iPhone 2022 models, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max, have fallen by 28% in the first 38 days in the market compared to the iPhone 13 product family, with the most recent data showing this worsening to 33%, according to a Friday note by analysts led by Edison Lee. The more expensive iPhone 14 Pro variants, which had proved more resilient this year, also lost steam.

The global smartphone market, especially China, has been one of the hardest hit by the drop in consumer spending this year. Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s largest manufacturer of phones, displays and memory, cited declining handset sales in China as a barrier to its components business. The country also poses potential challenges for Apple on the supply side, where the main iPhone assembly plant in Zhengzhou was abruptly shut down this week by Covid-19.

While domestic Chinese brands have already endured most of their sales declines earlier in the year with major declines, Apple’s lineup maintained its appeal, increasing sales by 5.7% in the three months to September, according to an earlier analysis. from Jefferies.

An Apple representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The crucial first few weeks of sales of Apple’s latest-generation handsets set the tone for the company’s production and pricing plans for the rest of the year. Discounts for the Nov. 11 Singles Day shopping festival already appear to be deeper and more widely available than last year, Jefferies said. Shoppers from Tmall of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. can get 400 yuan discount on iPhone 14 as the festival approaches.

“The vast majority of iPhone 13 series buyers on Tmall probably got zero discount last year. But the discounts are available to everyone this year,” wrote Lee and his colleagues. “Even a price drop of a few percentage points wouldn’t help demand for the non-Pro models, given the unattractive price/performance, a growing used phone market and weak consumer confidence.”
