An IAS officer from Uttar Pradesh has been removed by the Election Commission as general observer for elections in Gujarat for indulging in a “publicity stunt” by posting pictures of his assignment on Instagram, sources said on Friday.
In a strongly worded letter to Gujarat’s chief election official on Friday, EC said the 2011 party official used the social media platform Instagram to share his post as a general observer and used his official position as a “publicity stunt”.
The polling panel also shared photos with the CEO uploaded by the officer on the social media platform, the sources said.
Citing the EC statement, the sources said the polling panel took the matter “very seriously” and immediately relieved the officer of his duties as general observer.
He is also barred from any election-related duties until further notice. The officer was also ordered to immediately leave the constituency for which he had been given responsibility and report to his nodal officer in the superordinate cadre.
All government facilities made available to him to facilitate the performance of his observer duties are being withdrawn, according to the sources, the letter said.
Another IAS officer has been put in charge of the conference chairs the other officer was handling, they said.
