A large-scale protest erupted outside Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Sangrur as the CM campaigns for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Gujarat. The farm workers and unions staged a protest demanding an increase in their minimum daily wage to Rs 700 under MNREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme).
While some reports said police resorted to lathicharge, the claims were later denied by police, who said the protests were peaceful.
“No lathi charge has been made and the protest is proceeding in a peaceful manner. An aggressive faction of protesters surrendered to a scuffle, which was later checked by police. We have taken note of their demands,” said SSP Sangrur.
