Intel has finally launched its 4th Gen Xeon Scalable Processor (codenamed Sapphire Rapids). At this week’s launch event, Intel described the new Xeon as one of its most significant product launches to date.

The event introduced the new Intel Xeon CPU Max Series, also known as Sapphire Rapids HBM. It is an x86-based processor with high-bandwidth memory intended to boost HPC applications without the need for customization. In addition, Intel unveiled its Data Center GPU Max Series, also known as Ponte Vecchio, which was created to provide better edge, cloud, network and edge computing capabilities.

Intel launches 4th generation Xeon scalable processors for data center, cloud and AI computing

Intel’s 4th generation Xeon Max series CPU is the first and only x86-based processor with high-bandwidth memory, accelerating many HPC workloads without code changes.

In addition to improving data center and cloud infrastructure performance, the new CPUs are important to Intel and its partners for other reasons. The delays, initially due to production issues and ultimately due to a bug discovered last year, helped AMD expand its presence in the data center.

According to Intel, the 4th Gen Xeon processors offer customers a variety of options for power and performance control, making the most of CPU resources to help meet their endurance goals. These processors are Intel’s most environmentally friendly data center CPUs.

By leveraging built-in accelerators, consumers of the 4th Gen Intel Xeon can expect a 2.9x increase in average performance efficiency per watt for specific workloads compared to previous generations.

The company said the 4th generation Xeon family significantly expands Intel’s purpose-built, workload-first strategy and approach. It also offers a range of processors specifically optimized for high performance, low latency networks and edge workloads.

In addition, the Xeon CPU Max series is the first and only x86-based processor with high-bandwidth memory, accelerating various HPC tasks without the need for code changes. According to Intel, the Data Center GPU Max Series, Intel’s highest density CPU, will be offered in a variety of form factors to meet different customer requirements.

In addition, the 64 GB of super-fast RAM that the Xeon CPU Max series provides on the package significantly increases data throughput for HPC and AI applications.

Major cloud providers that have already deployed Intel’s new 4th Gen Xeon Scalable processor include AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud, IBM, and Oracle. AWS has already deployed the latest processors in its EC2 service, Amazon VP David Brown said.

The Xeon CPU Max series outperforms the top-of-the-range 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors by up to 3.7 times 10 in a range of practical applications, including power and ground system modeling, according to Intel.

Intel officials also praised the security upgrades made to the 4th Gen Xeon Scalable CPU. Intel’s 3rd Generation Xeon Scalable CPU has Software Guard Extensions (SGX), which this processor supports. By minimizing the attack surface in private, public, and cloud-to-edge situations, Intel SGX provides secure computing.

Trust Domain Extensions (TDX), a virtual machine isolation technology that Intel created to make it easier for apps to move into secure computing environments, is now a feature of the new 4th generation Xeon processor.
