South Korea on Wednesday ordered residents of the island of Ulleungdo off the east coast to evacuate to bunkers after North Korea fired three short-range missiles.
A missile headed toward the island before landing in the high seas, according to Yonhap News, which quoted defense officials as saying.
An air raid warning broadcast on national television told Ulleungdo residents to “evacuate to the nearest underground shelter”.
North Korea fired an “unidentified ballistic missile” on Wednesday, the Seoul military said, a test following Pyongyang’s warnings about large-scale joint air exercises conducted by South Korea and the US.
“North Korea is firing an unidentified ballistic missile toward the Baltic Sea,” the joint chiefs of staff said in a statement, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.
